Dr Paran Nadeswaran

Dr Nadeswaran is a consultant psychiatrist with dual subspecialty qualifications in Forensic Psychiatry and Consultation–Liaison Psychiatry, with experience across high-secure, medium-secure, custodial, and civil mental-health settings.

He has worked as a forensic psychiatrist at The Forensic Hospital and Cumberland Hospital providing assessment and treatment for men and women detained under forensic and civil legislation, including patients with complex comorbidities, violent or sexual offending, and treatment-resistant illness. His clinical practice has also encompassed consultation–liaison psychiatry in major tertiary hospitals, managing high-risk medical and psychiatric presentations including self-harm, trauma, and eating disorders, as well as community and custodial forensic services for offenders under supervision.

Dr Nadeswaran provides expert psychiatric opinion in criminal, civil, and tribunal matters, including assessments of decision-making capacity, criminal responsibility, risk, negligence, and duty of care. His professional interests include capacity and consent in eating disorders and severe mental illness, and the ethics and language of compulsory treatment.

He holds a Master of Forensic Mental Health (with excellence) from the University of New South Wales, where he received the Professor David Greenberg Prize in Forensic Mental Health, a Master of Medicine (Advanced) in Psychiatry from the University of Sydney, and a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery from Western Sydney University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, serves as a lecturer for the HETI Master of Psychiatry program, is a national panel question writer for the Australian Medical Council, and is a member of the RANZCP Binational Subcommittee for Advanced Training in Forensic Psychiatry.

Dr Nadeswaran maintains public clinical appointments at The Forensic Hospital and Ryde Hospital and provides private medicolegal assessments and reports in New South Wales and nationally.
