In response, Kellyville Private Hospital has launched an innovative short-stay inpatient program designed to offer rapid access to diagnosis, support, and treatment for ADHD. However, it’s important to note that while ADHD may prompt patients to seek help, the program’s primary focus is on managing co-existing conditions that could be related to ADHD, such as mood and anxiety disorders, which are often the underlying reasons for admission.
Led by Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Tanveer Ahmed, the program allows GPs to refer patients directly into the hospital, facilitating admission and care within a few days. Patients benefit from a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, specialised nurses, and allied health professionals, with an evidence-based focus on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)—a recognised and effective treatment for mood and anxiety disorders, often present alongside ADHD.
“Barely 20 years ago, my industry viewed ADHD as something only in children. That has dramatically changed. Diagnosis is skyrocketing, particularly among adult women in their 30s and 40s, and it often coexists with anxiety and other mental health conditions,” says Dr Tanveer Ahmed.
“One of the most rewarding aspects of my practice is hearing incredible recovery stories from patients who access comprehensive treatment.”
Despite growing awareness, accessing care remains challenging. Medication restrictions and high demand have driven up costs, with many patients facing long wait times and significant financial barriers.
“The demand for diagnosis and restrictions around stimulant medication prescriptions mean the need for appropriate practitioners far outweighs availability,” Dr Ahmed explains.
“As a result, the market for ADHD diagnosis has become skewed, with patients often waiting over six months and paying upwards of $1,000 to access necessary care.”
Kellyville Private’s program provides a much-needed solution, offering rapid, comprehensive assessments and treatment plans that address both ADHD and co-existing mental health conditions.
CEO Dakshai Patel emphasises the program’s holistic approach.
“Our ADHD program provides residents in Sydney’s North-West with rapid access to diagnosis and management plans that focus on improving overall mental health. Patients benefit from CBT-based group therapy sessions, equipping them with practical tools to manage anxiety and mood challenges,” says Dakshai.
“The program also provides flexible payment options, with most private health funds covering the service. For those without private insurance, fee-for-service packages are available.”
